The first 12 hours of the 13th Annual David Feltner Memorial Bike-a-Thon is in the books at Pi Kappa Phi.
The event kicked off at 1 p.m. with the temperature in the low 70s, but quickly turned into rain on Thursday afternoon. But by early evening, the rain had stopped and into the evening turned into a very pleasant night.
By 1 a.m. on Friday, 34 hours had been completed on the three stationary bikes, which included at least three by women riders, too. Numerous others hung out at the site outside the fraternity house, 330 N. Grant St., to encourage donations or to support the cyclists.
The annual three-day event raises money and awareness for The Ability Experience, the national outreach program of the fraternity for people with disabilities. It is named in memory of Feltner, who died as an undergraduate in 2011 of a rare form of cancer. Feltner was a key contributor to the chapter’s annual fund-raising and outreach events.
The bike-a-thon will conclude at 1 p.m. Saturday, just prior to the 3:30 p.m. homecoming football game featuring Purdue vs. Illinois in Ross-Ade Stadium.
