72-hour bike-a-thon raises more than $2,500 in first 20 hours

October 27, 2022 Written by Nate Grabner

Less than 24 hours into their annual 72-hour cycling event, members of Pi Kappa Phi have already raised more than $2,500 for people with disabilities.

The event started its annual David Feltner Memorial Bike-a-Thon at 6 p.m. Wednesday and it will conclude at 6 p.m. Saturday as part of chapter’s centennial celebration at the Purdue Memorial Union’s ballrooms. The bike-a-thon is in memory of Felter, an undergraduate committed to The Ability Experience and its efforts, died in 2011 from a rare form of childhood cancer.

Day and night, chapter members – and some alumni – will ride one of three stationary bikes near the Purdue belltower in the central part of campus. On Wednesday night, temperatures were barely above freezing, but two bikes continued to be pedaled continuously.

Temperatures on Wednesday were in the low 60s and Thursday will only get to the mid-50s. But it once again should be mid- to low-30s on Thursday and Friday nights. Nonetheless, enthusiasm remains high.

You can assist the fund-raising through the website below:

or by donation via Venmo @PurduePiKapps.

On Thursday afternoon, one passer-by even gave $10 in Brazilian money.

The chapter members and the local agencies that benefit from the chapter members volunteering and fund-raising – the Arc of Tippecanoe and Life Has No Boundaries – thank you!

Questions: Contact chapter Ability Experience Chairman Grant Gottlieb at 317/989-7797 or [email protected].

CENTENNIAL INFO: For those attending this weekend’s events, business casual is the dress. We suggest wearing the Centennial polo shirts, if you ordered one. If you didn’t then business casual is appropriate throughout the day.
