On Jan. 28, more than three dozen prospective new members learned about Pi Kappa Phi’s commitment to service during a recruitment event.
The Ability Experience, the national fraternity’s outreach effort to serve people with disabilities was showcased during the event. Visitors heard from a panel discussion of chapter members – Nate Parker, Dan Burkhard, Michael Bailey, Jack Kellison and Gus Dunbar – who talked about their multi-layered participation in chapter and national events.
Each academic year, the chapter conducts multiple fund raisers – the David Feltner 72-Hour Memorial Bike-a-Thon, War of Roses, Pi Kapp 100 and Moms Day Auction – to assist people with disabilities. Furthermore, the chapter does service projects – Arctoberfest, volunteering in a local high school special needs classes and the Pi Kapp/Best Buddy Prom – alongside those who have special needs, not to raise funds, but for service.
It also has had 88 members from Purdue participate in the Journey of Hope and 10 on Gear Up Florida – both national cycling events raising money and awareness for people with disabilities. In 2019, it sent dozens to assist a camp in Illinois. And the chapter participates in the BMOC (Big Man on Campus) and PUDM (Purdue University Dance Marathon).
Pi Kappa Phi, 330 N. Grant St., is in the third full week of new member recruitment. Recruitment events will end next week, but there are at least two other opportunities for men who want to be considered for membership to attend events.
Its commitment to service is one area that sets Pi Kappa Phi apart from other Purdue fraternities. Pi Kappa Phi also prides itself on leadership and academic achievement. That three-pronged pillar has brought the chapter unprecedented accolades on campus and nationally.
For example, Pi Kappa Phi has been named the top fraternity at Purdue 9 of the last 12 years. Furthermore in 2019, it was named an Award of Distinction winner as one of the top 5 chapters in the United States of all fraternities on all college campuses.
Also, the Purdue chapter has the 2019 Pi Kappa Phi National Student of the Year, 2019 Interfraternity President of the Year and co-director of Old Masters among its ranks.
