On Wednesday, a group of nearly two dozen men from Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, went to a city park continuing their commitment to serving people with disabilities.
For several years, the fraternity has partnered with Life Has No Boundaries, a non-profit local organization assisting young adults in a wide variety of ways. This week, fraternity men played card games and basketball, drew chalk figures on sidewalks and generally supported the needs of 20 clients for more than an hour.
The list of fraternity volunteers included some new members who joined the chapter last week, too.
Pi Kappa Phi at Purdue is committed to outreach programs and fund-raising for people with disabilities. Oftentimes several times a week they work with Life Has No Boundaries clients on life skills including socialization, mentoring and being a presence with those who are often forgotten. For nearly two decades, the chapter also assists another local agency, the Arc of Tippecanoe, with its programming as well. Chapter leadership is working with the local Arc chapter in scheduling a late October Halloween costume and dance party.
“I am so proud of our chapter’s commitment and passion in serving those in need,” said Joe Barbera, the fraternity’s Ability Experience chairman. “It’s rewarding to see how many chapter members volunteer their time that makes the clients so happy. It makes me swell up in pride. I just love every moment being there and seeing our guys enjoy themselves, too.”
Another major upcoming fund-raising event – the 14th Annual David Feltner Memorial Bike-a-Thon – will kick off at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25 and run continuously through 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 28. Chapter members and alumni will ride up to three stationary bikes simultaneously over three days at the Purdue belltower raising money and awareness for people with disabilities in memory of a fraternity member who died in 2011.
Money raised from the bike-a-thon will benefit The Ability Experience, the national fraternity’s outreach program assisting people with disabilities. One-quarter of the chapter’s annual fund-raising is shared with Life Has No Boundaries and the Arc of Tippecanoe.
