Pi Kappa Phi maintained its strong presence in this year’s dance marathon contributing more than $10,000 to the cause.
The Purdue University Dance Marathon is part of a national coalition raising money for childhood cancer research. The local effort assists the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. The event also honors three students who were treated at Riley, but lost their battle with cancer – John Romine, David Feltner and most recently Tyler Trent. Feltner was a Pi Kappa Phi member who died in 2011.
Once again, PUDM raised more than $1 million, the sixth consecutive year. The local marathon was established in 2005. The 2019 total announced at the end of the Nov. 9-10 event, was $1,065,610.
Pi Kappa Phi’s 35 members raised $10,596.
Chapter member Joey Krampen was among PUDM’s top 20 student executive board for the event as the Riley Relations manager. At the conclusion of the annual 18-hour dance, he was named the Ryan White Spirit Award by the members of the PUDM executive board.
As three-year participant in the marathon, Krampen understands its value.
“It means providing hope and possibilities for the families and kids at Riley Hospital for Children right now and in the future,” Krampen said. “Being involved with PUDM means deciding to take a stand today to help families you may never get to meet and developing the ability to make a positive impact in the lives of others while being at Purdue is priceless.
“Being a part of PUDM is like you’re a part of the care and research done at Riley to save lives.”
The chapter has a long tradition of having dancers and leaders in the organization. Servant leadership is emphasized during the recruitment process.
“It’s important for fraternity members to join together and do this type of service work because we have the ability to make an impact as a group and come together to do something amazing for Riley,” Krampen said. “Fraternities have the potential to unite as one under a common cause and places like Riley need that kind of passion and unity from everyone in the community.”
